Capacitor Quiz

Pop quiz!

Examine the markings on the following capacitors and determine their values. To assist you, I've captioned each capacitor with a copy of its text. Click on the picture to get a larger version.

Hint: Here's a link to an explanation of capacitor markings on Wikipedia. Hint hint: You'd probably have better luck just guessing.

All of the capacitors in the top row are ten picofarads, and all of the capacitors in the bottom row are one hundred picofarads. A capacitor marking of "100" should be 10 pF, but many manufacturers label them incorrectly. Measure your parts!

4 out of 6. And that is why I keep a HP4271A within reach in my lab ...

They are awful (not aweful), but at least they are not like capacitor markings in the '40s and '50s (on larger capacitors) with the unit "mmf" which meant micro micro farad, or picofarad.
